More than 53,000 cyber security incidents took place in India last year, as per a report by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). The report was submitted to Indian Parliament by IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, where he mentioned that these cybersecurity incidents included website intrusions and defacements, virus and malicious code, phishing, scanning and probing, ransomware, as well as denial of service attacks. “As per the information reported to and tracked by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a total number of 44679, 49455, 50362 and 53081 cyber security incidents were observed during the year 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, respectively,” wrote Ravi Shankar Prasad in a reply to Rajya Sabha (Indian Parliament). The current data shows that the cyberattacks are rapidly increasing every year. While the rise in cyberattacks was low in 2016, it tripled in 2017 when compared to 2016. “With the proliferation and vast expansion of Information Technology and related services, there is a rise in instances of cybercrimes including financial frauds, using bank cards and e-wallets in the country like elsewhere in the world,” he added. As per the data by NCRB (National Crime Record Bureau), over 9622, 11592, and 12317 cases related to cybercrime were registered in 2014, 2015, and 2016, respectively. Indian government has taken several legal, technical and administrative steps to control cybercrime. In 2014, the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) was established for the protection of critical infrastructure in the country. ‘Digital India’ campaign is among leading initiatives by the Indian Government to develop the country. It is empowering Indian citizens by enhancing connectivity, improving electronic delivery of government services, etc. However, the more India is moving toward digitalization, the more is the increase in cybercrime. As the open-source community completed a decade of existence, GitHub released a report which reveals the top open source project trends for 2018, on the basis of contributors, visitors, and star activity data. Today, GitHub is used by millions of developers to share code and build business. It isn’t just about the code (like all things in life), it’s the people that keep the project moving forward and alive along with the community of users. TensorFlow/TensorFlow (24k) and Microsoft/vscode (15k) had the most number of active repositories in 2017. While Kubernetes/Kubernetes was the most discussed repository in the year. GitHub is home to open source projects written in 337 unique programming languages, especially JavaScript. Java, the second most popular language on GitHub in 2016, has been replaced by Python in 2017. Below are the top open-source project trends to look out for in the year ahead. Cross-platform development GitHub revealed that cross-platform/web development showed the highest activity growth in 2017. It was the most contributed, most visited, and most starred project. The cross-platform development leads to easier development process and enables deployment across desktop and mobile platforms in lesser time. As per the data, Angular/angular-cli repository saw the highest growth, with a 2.2 time increase in contributors in 2017, as compared to a year ago. Deep learning & Machine learning Artificial intelligence, especially its deep learning category, drove the interest of a number of users. The deep learning projects like Keras-team/Keras and Mozilla/DeepSpeech were the most contributed projects in 2017. The visitors for TensorFlow/TensorFlow in 2017 grew 2.2 times from 2016, while TensowFlow/models visitors grew 5.5 times. The popularity of image and speech recognition, and other such technologies among enterprises, is contributing towards the implementation of deep learning. Machine learning, the practice of teaching a computer to learn, attracted users to the repositories, including scikit-learn/scikit-learn and keras-team/keras. While Tensorflow repository provides scalable machine learning using data flow graphs, scikit-learn offers machine learning in Python language. New skills The repositories which were designed to teach new coding skills ranked third in the list. Users starred a lot of projects related to getting coding jobs, learning to code, and coding best practices. Like, Chalarangelo/30-seconds-of-code and norvig/pytudes helped users with code examples in JavaScript and Python, respectively and helped users gain fluency in them. There were more coding skills which guided users with ways to pass software engineering interviews, and in picking up or brushing existing skills. Lazarus Group, the North Korean hacking group responsible for WannaCry ransomware attack last year, is back again with a new campaign targeting crypto currency and financial organizations. The new campaign, dubbed HaoBao, has been discovered by cybersecurity researchers at McAfee. From April to October 2017, the Lazarus Group posed as Hong-Kong based job recruiters and targeted individuals with malicious emails in English and Korean language. Using these malicious emails, Lazarus accessed the environment of victims, and obtained insights to key programs. Now, the hacking group is using its phishing-emails-experience to attack bitcoin users and global banks. They send the emails with a Dropbox link attached to them. hxxps://www.dropbox.com/s/qje0yrz03au66d0/JobDescription.doc?dl=1 This Dropbox link contains malicious payloads, present in the document as encrypted string arrays. When auser click on the link, the payloads are decrypted in memory, written to disk and launched in sequence. Simply said, if the user clicks the link, a malware is installed on the system which scans the computer for cryptocurrency activity. In case, some activity is detected, it establishes a secondary implant to gather data for long-term. “The dropped implants have never been seen before in the wild and have not been used in previous Lazarus campaigns from 2017. Furthermore, this campaign deploys a one-time data gathering implant that relies upon downloading a second stage to gain persistence. The implants contain a hardcoded word “haobao” that is used as a switch when executing from the Visual Basic macro,” wrote Ryan Sherstobitoff, McAfee Analyst in a blog post. The attached documents in the emails had the last author named ‘Windows User’, and it was created using Korean language resources on January 16th. McAfee noted that a few more documents with the same author appeared between January 16 to January 24, 2018. The leading interconnection and data center company, Equinix, made an announcement to acquire Infomart Dallas, for $800 million. The Infomart, one of the largest interconnection hub in the US, currently houses four of Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) datacenters (DA1, DA2, DA3 and DA6). The company has total eight IBX datacenters in Dallas, which support around 3500 built out cabinets. The transaction, expected to be closed by mid-2018, includes Infomart’s operations and tenants. As part of the transaction, around 50 of Infomart employees, mostly from operations section, will become employees of Equinix. “Equinix will increase the number of its owned assets by four, increasing recurring revenue from owned assets to more than 45 percent.” The 1.6 million gross-square-foot Infomart building generated a revenue of around $50 million in 2017. The eight Equinix IBX datacenters in Dallas house around 100 network service providers, which make Equinix the largest data center provider in Dallas metro area. The acquisition will help Equinix to expand its global platform, especially in the Dallas market, for future development. It will also enable Equinix to help other companies shift their business from traditional model to a digital one, and interconnect with people, locations, cloud services and data worldwide. “As Dallas becomes an increasingly strategic North American interconnection hub for businesses making the shift to digital, the acquisition of the Infomart will enable existing and new customers to scale their operations with Equinix,” said Karl Strohmeyer, President, Americas, Equinix. “This includes a rich portfolio of interconnection options, including on-demand connections to partners and infrastructure in any Equinix location globally through the new capabilities of Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric.” This is Equinix’s first acquisition in 2018, which follows the acquisition of Australian datacenter business Metronode in December last year. In the same month, Equinix expanded its global platform through virtual and physical connection between its IBX datacenters worldwide. This enabled customers to connect to other Equinix customers from other Equinix locations.
