CHICAGO, IL – NTT Ltd., one of the world’s largest data center and technology services providers, today announced that its Global Data Centers Americas division is rapidly passing several key construction milestones as it targets an opening date for a new Chicago data center campus by early 2021. This campus will be a key strategic addition to NTT Ltd.’s global data center portfolio, which operates the third-largest data center platform in the world, with over 160 data centers spanning more than 20 countries and regions.

Located near Chicago in Itasca, Illinois, NTT’s new 19-acre campus will have two buildings offering a total of 72 megawatts of critical IT load. Each of the two buildings will offer 36 megawatts and 250,000 sq. ft. of space spread over two stories. The first six megawatts of critical IT load will be available by early 2021.


“The first building on our Chicago Data Center campus is standing up its core and shell now,” said Doug Adams, President and CEO of NTT Global Data Centers Americas (formerly known as RagingWire Data Centers). “By using modular construction techniques, economies of scale, and carefully planned supply chain management, we have lowered construction costs and will be able to affordably offer all the space and critical IT power needed to help companies grow and scale their data center presence as their business needs evolve.”

NTT chose to build in Chicago because of a compelling list of benefits for data center customers. Chicago has an extensive fiber network, affordable electricity, minimal risk of natural disasters, nearby airports, and abundant amenities. In addition, Illinois recently passed a bill that exempts qualifying data centers from paying state and local sales tax on equipment such as servers and storage racks.

“Tax incentives make Chicago one of the most affordable national markets for data center clients,” said Andy Cvengros, Senior Vice President of JLL. “We anticipate that an uptick in leasing activity will occur in 2020, with major cloud companies continuing to expand in the Chicagoland market.”

The two data centers on NTT’s Chicago campus will be designed with customizable high-density vaults in order to support both single-user and colocation requirements of hyperscale cloud and enterprise clients. Power and cooling systems will offer a 100% availability SLA by leveraging a “4 to make 3 design” to provide N+1 redundancy at the rack level.

Choices for network connectivity will be plentiful in a carrier-neutral environment with access to many global and regional carriers, Internet service providers, and cloud services. Clients will be supported 24x7x365 by highly-trained staff experts in operations, facilities management, security, and shipping & receiving.

Itasca is in a prime area for wholesale data centers, which includes Franklin Park and Elk Grove Village. Data center customers will appreciate NTT’s campus location in the Hamilton Lakes Business Park, at the intersection of the new Elgin O’Hare Expressway (I-390) and I-355. Hamilton Lakes Business Park is only 15 minutes from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and features the Westin Hotel, the Hamilton Lakes Athletic Club, a daycare center, walking paths around lakes, and various restaurants and delicatessens.

Downtown commuters will find easy access to NTT’s Chicago Data Center Campus through the use of DASH cars, which are 100 percent electric vehicles that go from the Itasca Metra Station to the business park in just a few minutes.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Digital Realty (NYSE: DLR), a leading global provider of cloud- and carrier-neutral data center, colocation and interconnection solutions, announced today a new 7.5-year power and renewable energy credit agreement with Citi to supply clean, renewable energy for Digital Realty’s portfolio of data centers in the Dallas, Texas region. This contract will advance Digital Realty’s environmental and sustainability goals by supplying approximately 30% of the company’s power needs in this market.

The transaction provides Digital Realty with over 260,000 megawatt-hours of renewable energy annually, which represents 55% of the wind generation project output being developed by Bearkat Wind Energy II, LLC. The energy provided through the 162-megawatt project in Glasscock County will serve a portion of the power needs of Digital Realty’s 13 data centers in the Greater Dallas, Texas region.

The wind power agreement represents another significant step Digital Realty has taken to extend sustainability initiatives across its global portfolio. In 2019, Digital Realty certified an industry-leading 29 data centers under the ENERGY STAR program.

In 2019, the company announced an additional 50 megawatts of renewables to support its data centers in Ashburn, Virginia and signed a green tariff agreement with Portland General Electric which will supply approximately 120,000 megawatt-hours annually to its new development project in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Digital Realty is employing several renewable energy strategies to increase the portion of renewable energy available to power its data centers and locking in advantageous energy pricing for the benefit of its customers. The renewable energy from the Texas project is expected to be available to customers beginning in June 2021.

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Rackspace today announced the launch of strategic initiatives to meet the increasing international demand for cloud technology services.
