A safe hosting site that I can experiment web designing on?

I have never created a web page. So I would like to try to create a experimental website, before I feel confident to create a live web page I would like to put. Any suggestions to a web hosting site I can go to? Thanks!

You dont have to host it on the internet, you can host a website from your computer for testing purposes. Just create a file with the .html extension and open it with windows explorer. Viola!

Entire website content here.

Copy and past the code above and save it as (website.html). Then modify it however you want, there are tons of tutorials and such on the internet.

don’t experiment with a production server!

you should install a server package like WAPP (postgresql) or WAMP (Mysql) or XAMPP (apache’s version , mysql).
these have apache web server, PHP web server scripting, and either mysql or postgresql database preconfigured (and they may have more as in the case of xampp, such as mercury mail server and filezilla ftp server).

I would suggest WAMP or XAMPP. xampp puts everything into c:xampp and has problems on newer versions of windows, so I suggest WAMP.

you should look for the htdocs (it might be called htdocs in WAMP, it is in XAMPP) directory. that is where your html files should go.
index.html or index.xhtml is your main/root/home page. it could also be index.php or index.shtml, but I don’t think it might be configured for shtml. I highly suggest using HTML 4.01. you can always upgrade to version 5.

use lowercase tags and attributes as a practice and you won’t have to convert hardly anything later.

since apache and the database are services, you can only install one of them. but there is a way to configure apache to do virtual hosting to simulate multiple sites in multiple separate directories of your choice from a single network card, and you can set up your hosts file so that it has entries like
192.168.1.100 mycomputername mywebsite1 mywebsite2

and you may need to change this often.
so then you can do things like
http://mywebsite1 http://mywebsite2/code.html
in your browser.
but don’t put in .com’s or such like in there, or you won’t be able to visit them except in your local machine.

What Michael said.

If you put it on the web, it’s ‘live’.

I personally recommend Hostgator. They offer unlimited disk space and bandwdith, great uptime, tons of features, and excellent support. To learn more, go to: http://webspacehq.net/

Don’t upload your website to the main folder. Create another folder (such as /dev) and make sure to implement a robots.txt file before you upload anything. This tells search engines not to crawl that folder. To learn more, go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robots_exclusion_standard

When you’re ready to make it go live, just move your files to the main folder.

Try iPage. Web hosting and domain registration are two important aspects of a website. When a website is developed and designed, it is important to have it uploaded on a web hosting server. You can now book a domain name free of cost when you register. If you are into the business of hosting websites for your clients then every free domain name can give you a lot of advantage over your competitors. >> http://p.gs/xnua6

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: http://www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:

http://www.threehosts.com/reviews/1st

Only $3.95 /month (with discount coupon).

They also offer “Free Site Builder” that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get). You can use this service optionally. You can also create the pages offline with your favorite program (DreamWeaver, FrontPage, Microsoft Publisher, iWeb etc.), and then upload them to your web host. This is another easy way to get your website online.

******IMPORTANT********
* This service was awarded “The Best Web Host OF The Year”.
* If you sign up for this service you will have $75 credits to advertise your website with the google & yahoo search engines for free!
* You Can Register A Free Domain or Use Your Existing Domains. They Support All Domain Names.

A great web host for your needs would be http://www.myownfreeweb.com where you can set up as many free web sites as you like, get free domain name and get a free web page builder. You can experiement with the web page builder until you get confident with what you are doing, then start using your own programs like Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc and upload your own designs. The best part is that the web sites and hosting are free so you have nothing to loose.

Putting it on the internet is not a bad thing at all, at least then you can easily share your work, and ask others for advice without opening up your network at home.
If you are simply just wanting to EXPERIMENT with web development, I would no way recommend setting up your own home web server, as that is simply just a complete waste of time. Do not worry at all about it being ‘live’ online, as you can get a web host that allows you to password protect your website anyway. So get yourself a cheap, web host, which offers instant activation and possibly cPanel – a leading web hosting control panel, to allow you get set up straight away.

Advantages of having it online also is that you have access to far more features, and also you can see what your site looks like on other computers then too.
