Web Hosting Virtualization Provider, Parallels, Debuts Bundled Desktop Solution

Renton, Washington – (The Hosting News) – June 25, 2008 – Web hosting server virtualization, automation and software provider, Parallels, has launched with Quest Software, a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) bundle, designed to offer a centralized Windows desktop deployment and management platform.

The end-to-end stack is hoped to significantly reduce the management and security headache of desktop computing, and reduces the investment required in hardware and software licenses.

The combination of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers server virtualization and Quest’s Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite (VAS) desktop brokering and management solution simplifies desktop and image management, improves security, addresses regulatory compliance and offers the most cost-efficient approach to terminal services.

Michael Rose, Research Analyst at IDC noted, ”The bundled VDI solution from Quest Software and Parallels provides customers with a unique offering of high consolidation ratios and a reduction in image management requirements. The combined platform can enable organizations to build a VDI infrastructure with high density that maximizes management efficiency.”

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers enables users to run multiple workloads as isolated, simultaneously executing virtual environments called ‘containers.’ Since it is installed on top of the operating system (OS), the containers use the resources of the underlying host OS, rather than needing their own. This means a far greater density of workloads can be run on a physical server: three times that of other approaches. In addition, fewer deployed OS instances means the solution is easier to manage and containers can be provisioned with applications and services on-the-fly, with a single click.

Paul Ghostine, VP and General Manager of Quest Software’s Provision Networks division remarked, ”By delivering up to three times the number of virtual desktops on each physical server, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers makes VDI a truly cost effective solution. We see this partnership as an opportunity to further extend our leadership in the VDI space by giving customers a variety of platform choices for their desktop virtualization needs.”

Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite is the only enterprise-grade Virtual Desktop Infrastructure solution, providing multi-platform integration and the most comprehensive desktop lifecycle management capabilities. These include automated provisioning, sysprep editing, AD integration, power management, support for application streaming, advanced brokering and arbitration, a complete scheduling infrastructure for automated task execution, and the best experience for LAN and WAN users.

Serguei Beloussov, CEO, Parallels explained, ”The combination of our two best-of-breed solutions offers customers a desktop computing solution that reduces management headaches and easily scales to meet the business’ needs. We are pleased to work with Quest Software’s Provision Networks Division, providing customers an easy path to centralizing, virtualizing and optimizing their desktop infrastructure.”

Quest Software, Inc., an enterprise systems management vendor, delivers products designed to help organizations get more performance and productivity from their applications, databases, Windows infrastructure and virtual environments. Unlike virtual machines and hypervisors, Virtuozzo Containers addresses the challenges of operating system sprawl faced by today’s data centers. Its unique architecture and management tools make Parallels Virtuozzo Containers the ideal solution for provisioning, monitoring and managing virtualized server resources.

ServInt, Web Hosting Firm, Adopts New Environmental Initiative

McLean, Virginia – (The Hosting News) – June 19, 2008 – Business web hosting firm, ServInt, has adopted and developed a new Green Initiative, in an effort to demonstrate its commitment to climate-positive hosting.

ServInt’s Green Initiative also outlines commitments to responsible recycling of hardware at end of life. ServInt recycles all recyclable components and meets or exceeds environmental standards for the disposal of all non-recyclable hazardous components.

Reed Caldwell, Founder and CEO of ServInt noted, ”The web hosting industry is a major contributor to global energy consumption and carbon emissions. ServInt is committed to offering hosting services that have a positive effect on the environment.”

ServInt’s Green Initiative deploys multiple green methodologies to help customers operate with minimal environmental impact. ServInt’s commitment to climate-positive hosting applies to its entire line of Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting services. Each of ServInt’s VPS services is backed by a commitment to offset the total carbon footprint of the VPS by at least 110 percent. ServInt accomplishes its carbon-offsetting goals through large-scale reforestation campaigns operated by American Forests.

To ensure a truly climate-positive approach, ServInt calculates its reforestation commitment not only on the energy consumption of the host servers, but on its entire VPS infrastructure. That includes compensating for all core routing and switching equipment, for cooling and redundant power operations, and for an extensive back-LAN that provides customers with free backups and centralized update repositories.

As part of its Green Initiative, ServInt announced that two of its most popular hosting services are now its most environmentally responsible offerings. ServInt’s SuperVPS and UltimateVPS services feature low per-capita energy consumption through efficient virtualization. These services also make exclusive use of Dell low-voltage server hardware, which provides high-performance while operating with a much smaller carbon footprint.

Both SuperVPS and UltimateVPS are powerful replacements for the traditional dedicated server. They offer customers increased redundancy while providing the same computing performance of a traditional dedicated server with significant cost savings. These solutions are ideal for small and medium-size web-based companies that demand a hosting service managed by experienced professionals.

Mr. Caldwell added, ”More businesses now realize that, besides harming the environment, energy-inefficient computing can adversely affect their company’s financial health and lead to serious competitive disadvantages. Our method of virtualization improves energy efficiency via the decommissioning of unnecessary physical servers and higher utilization of the remaining, more energy-efficient servers.”

ServInt was founded in Northern Virginia in 1995 as one of the first web-hosting companies to offer a managed, dedicated server solution. ServInt is a provider of high-reliability web hosting for businesses worldwide. It services are provided from multiple data centers, including a scalable suite of VPS, dedicated and enterprise-level server options. ServInt’s commitment to Green IT services is demonstrated by its popular Virtual Private Server (VPS) solutions. ServInt’s clients include thousands of customers in over 60 countries.

SoftLayer, Dedicated Server Solutions Firm, Enhances Content Delivery Network

Dallas, Texas – (The Hosting News) – June 17, 2008 – On-demand hosting services and virtual data center provider for the small to medium enterprise (SME), SoftLayer, has enhanced its content delivery network, CDNLayer, initially launched in the middle of May, 2008.

CDNLayer is SoftLayer’s industry leading content delivery network (CDN). It uses a system of servers running advanced software for organizing, storing, and streaming website content to end-users. Rather than serving content directly from the host server to the end-user, CDNLayer moves content from the host server to a node that is geographically closer to the end-user. This minimizes the distance the data has to travel, avoiding network traffic jams, and decreasing latency. CDNLayer includes tools for improved management and control, helping with digital rights management and content monetization. In addition, it features the ease-of-use and a high level of control for which SoftLayer is known.

George Karidis, Chief Strategy Officer at SoftLayer remarked, ”SoftLayer customers are very sophisticated users of technology and we feel that it is critical to prioritize and respond to their requests. This is simply the first set of enhancements to CDNLayer that we have planned and expect to see an even more aggressive take-up of the service in the coming months.”

The new features that have been added to CDNLayer include:

  • Bandwidth Monitoring by CDN PoP
  • Origin Pull of Content
  • FTP Across the SoftLayer Private Network

These services are available from all SoftLayer datacenters, so customers can still choose the location that best suits their needs.

Over the last month, well over one hundred customers have signed up for CDNLayer. These early adopters have made suggestions for additional functionality, with these three features being the most requested.

More Information on the New Features includes:

Bandwidth Monitoring by CDN PoP – SoftLayer has deployed Point of Presence (PoP) bandwidth reporting. Customers can now determine the specific PoP being used to download content.

Origin Pull of Content – SoftLayer added the origin pull feature to CDNLayer. Each CDNLayer account can have an origin pull location which, when configured, will pull content from a web server at cache-controlled intervals before sending data to the final users’ CDNLayer requests. With origin pull, users do not have to upload content through the SoftLayer portal or API. They simply manage the content on the origin web server. Users must still use the portal or the API to upload streaming content, such as Windows Media and Flash video.

FTP Across the SoftLayer Private Network – SoftLayer has enabled customers to use FTP to populate their CDNLayer accounts. With FTP access, customers can use scripts to automate the file transfer. FTP is a very efficient and simple means of managing file transfers regardless of the file size. By delivering this across the private network, customers can now send files from their server without any charge against the monthly bandwidth allotment.

Recently, SoftLayer began receiving its delivery of servers under a new packaging program, designed to reduce packing materials by 80-percent. The program was created through several months of close collaboration between SoftLayer and its server manufacturer, Supermicro.

SoftLayer’s reduced packaging program provides multiple environmental benefits. It eliminates more than 8 pounds of packing material per server, as well as the shipment of user manuals and unnecessary components, thereby greatly reducing the volume of materials produced or recycled. Moreover, these measures reduce the total shipping ”footprint,” enabling the same sized shipping containers to carry more units and reducing the amount of fuel consumed and carbon emissions produced when shipping.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that recycling one ton of cardboard and paper products leads to saving:

  • 17 trees
  • 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space
  • 360 gallons of water
  • 100 gallons of gasoline
  • 60 pounds of air pollutants
  • 10,401 kilowatts of electricity

The savings from eliminating the initial production of the cardboard is even more dramatic. Based on these figures, SoftLayer’s new program will save over 750 trees per year.

Headquartered in Plano, Texas, SoftLayer provides next-generation web hosting and on-demand datacenter services on a global basis from facilities located in Dallas, TX and Seattle, WA. Utilizing proprietary management tools coupled with the industry’s first network-within-a-network topology, the company delivers unprecedented power and control to securely manage IT environments while providing unparalleled scalability.

Quebec, Canada – (The Hosting News) – June 12, 2008 – Internet hosting infrastructure provider, iWeb Group Inc. and subsidiary of iWeb Technologies, has attained ranking among Profit Magazine’s top 100 Canadian companies, based on revenue growth over the past 5 years.

From 2002 to 2007, the company’s revenues have gone from 1.35 million to 9.82 million as of October 1st 2007, an increase of 627%; enough for iWeb to make its entry into the 100th position on the annual ranking.

Eric Chouinard, CEO and co-founder of iWeb noted, ”The increase in revenue is not necessarily the measure of our success, but rather the cumulative result of all our successes combined. Our listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX-Venture) in 2004 has been an important milestone in this development.”

The PROFIT 100 is the annual ranking which rates the top 100 Canadian companies based on the percentage of their revenue growth over a 5-year span. Produced by the business magazine PROFIT, 2008 marks the 20th edition of the ranking.

Martin Leclair, Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of iWeb noted, ”iWeb has transformed itself a lot since 2002 comments In 5 years we have gone from 19 to 104 employees, from 500 square feet of web hosting facilities to more than 52 000 square feet in three datacenters, including the opening of a carrier-neutral colocation facility on Nun’s Island in May 2008. Growth management has become as important as technological management.”

Founded in 1996, iWeb offers a full line of advanced IP hosting services either through shared hosting, dedicated servers or colocation in three data centers, featuring over 52,000 square feet of floor space and the latest technological equipment. iWeb provides services in English, French and Spanish to clients in more than 130 countries.
